Assam Rifles launches 2nd phase of campaign against drugs

AIZAWL: The Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), launched the second phase of the anti-drug campaign in Mizoram with a road show by school students and NCC cadets on Saturday.

The campaign, named 'Ruihhlo Do: A War against Drugs', is being conducted in three phases across the State for the duration of two weeks starting from June 7 at the Aizawl Battalion, stated a press release.

A road show was carried out at Battalion Headquarter with an attendance of five teachers, 48 school students, three instructors and 13 NCC cadets.

The final programme, including felicitation and closing ceremony, will be held at the Aizawl Battalion on Monday, June 20.

At least 1,697 people, including 202 women, have died due to drug abuse in Mizoram since 1984 when the first drug-related death due to heroin was reported in the State. The locals appreciated the efforts of Assam Rifles for having organized such events for the betterment of society.

Meanwhile, the Lunglei Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), also conducted bike rally to spread awareness about drug abuse and de-addiction at Lunglei on Saturday.

The bike rally was conducted by 3 Assam Rifles in which bikers from the bikers' club of Lunglei, 'Royal Knights', and Leithangpui Biker Girls also participated in it.

The bike rally, which was flagged off by local MLA Dr K Pachhunga, was aimed at spreading the awareness about increasing drug abuse and addiction in the country and especially in Mizoram. The Commandant 3 Assam Rifles along with 40 bikers also visited the Rehabilitation Centre for addicts at 'WADA' and the 'Sinners Rescue Centre' where donation of essential commodities was done for better functioning of the rehabilitation centre and betterment of the patients taking the treatment.

The rally encouraged and motivated the youth of the Lunglei district to stand against drug abuse in the society for the betterment of all. President of 'WADA' and 'Sinners Rescue Centre' appreciated the efforts made by Assam Rifles for taking a further step in the fight against drug abuse and addiction. This noble gesture by the "Friends of Hill People" will go a long way in consolidating the harmonious relationship prevailing between the local populace and Assam Rifles.

WEAPONS DISPLAY: According to another press release, the Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), conducted a 'Weapons Display' at the Battalion Headquarter in Aizawl on Saturday.

A total of three parents, four teachers and 27 students attended the event.

The weapons display programme was organized with a view to motivating the local youth to join the Indian Army. During the event, the students were informed about the significance and motivation to join the Indian armed forces with the help of informative and motivational knowledge. The event was followed by serving of refreshments and an interactive session between the students and the Adjutant, 2 Assam Rifles.

A heartening response was received from the students with an inclination towards joining the Indian armed forces and the event was lauded by all.
